You’ve read the books. You’ve watched the hit series on HBO. Now acclaimed novelist Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson bring George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy masterwork A Game of Thronesto majestic new life in the pages of this full-color graphic novel. Comprised of the initial six issues of the graphic series, this is the first volume in what is sure to be one of the most coveted collaborations of the year.
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.
I’ve read the first 120 pages of A Game of Thrones, and so I could compare between the novel and the graphic novel for the first few sections of the first book, but then I was reading completely new things.
One of the biggest pluses of the book is the art. You can really see the detail and the love poured into each frame of the book. He’s an extremely talented artist, and I can just tell that each frame has taken him three or four hours. I mean, look at the detail on this page:
The characters are easily distinguishable, and the expressions on their faces are portrayed realistically and really quite well.
However, the story does not live up to the expectations the art delivers. The story moves extremely quickly, which, of course, is only understandable because of the excessive length of the A Game of Thrones novel. However, this means that a lot of detail and a lot of backstory/setting up is simply cut out to make less work for the artist. It’s quite hard to understand what is going on, especially if you haven’t read the story. If you haven’t read the story before, then I recommend you read at least the first 100 pages of the book before you read this, just to set things up. But if you have read the novel, then go ahead and buy this book. Support the artist and all the hard work that has gone into it.
To end, here are three wallpapers for you, from the House of Stark, Lannister and Targaryen! As always, drop me a comment below to request different sizes. This is 1440 by 900 pixels. All quotes belong to George RR Martin. Feel free to share!
